What’s a Pronoun? And Why Are They Important?
Addressing individuals by their correct pronouns is a way we create an inclusive environment as well as showing dignity and respect to those individuals.
Though pronouns have historically been assigned based on someone’s name or appearance and are limited to the male and female genders, we acknowledge that there are many individuals who do not identify as either and recognize gender on a spectrum. Making assumptions about an individual’s gender has the potential to send a harmful message that they need to look or demonstrate their gender in a way that doesn’t feel natural to them.
Sharing our own pronouns creates a welcoming environment for others to share their pronouns as well.
